Welding Technology – Joining Segment to Core

A diamond blade is only as strong as the joint between its segment and its steel core. If that joint fails, the segment can fly off at high speed - a dangerous and costly failure. Welding is the process that creates this critical joint, and understanding the different welding methods is essential for choosing the right blade.

Laser welding creates a true metallurgical bond - the segment and core literally become one piece of metal at the joint. This is why laser-welded blades can handle the toughest jobs and can be used for both wet and dry cutting.

Of all attachment methods, laser welding yields the strongest bond to the core. Here's why:

Precision  - The laser beam can be focused to a fraction of a millimeter, creating a clean, narrow weld

Strength  - The weld joint is as strong as the core material itself

Heat Control  - Minimal heat-affected zone means less thermal damage to the core

Brazing: The Traditional Approach

Brazing uses a silver-based alloy that melts at around 650°C and flows between the segment and the core. When cooled, this alloy creates a strong mechanical bond.

Advantages:

Lower equipment cost 

Suitable for smaller production runs 

Disadvantages :

Lower bond strength than laser welding 

Wider heat-affected zone - more thermal stress on the core
