Sintering Process – The Foundation of Diamond Tool Manufacturing
Before a diamond segment can cut, it must be born. Sintering is the process that transforms loose metal powders and diamond crystals into a solid, wear-resistant cutting segment.

What Is Sintering?
Sintering is a powder metallurgy process. Diamond crystals are mixed with metal bond powders (typically bronze, cobalt, iron, copper, or tungsten-based alloys), pressed into a mold, and heated to a temperature below the melting point of the metals. At this temperature, the metal particles fuse together - not by melting, but by atomic diffusion - locking the diamond crystals in place.
The result is a dense, solid segment with diamond particles evenly distributed throughout the metal matrix. When this segment is later welded to a steel core, it becomes a diamond blade.
Two Types of Sintering

| Hot Press Sintering | Powder is pressed and heated simultaneously under high pressure | High-performance blades, harder materials |
Hot press sintering produces a stronger bond and more uniform diamond distribution, making it the preferred method for professional-grade tools.
Typical hot press parameters:
Temperature : 680–850°C
Pressure : 200–300 kg/cm²
Time : 2.5–5 minutes per cycle
The key challenge: sintering temperature must stay below 1000°C to prevent diamond graphitization (when diamond turns back into soft graphite).
Why Sintering Matters
The sintering process directly determines three critical properties of a diamond tool:
Bond Strength - How well the metal matrix holds diamonds. Poor sintering = premature diamond loss.
Diamond Distribution - Even distribution means even wear and consistent cutting.
Porosity - High porosity weakens the segment; high-quality sintering achieves porosity below 1%.

One Final Reminder
Sintering is invisible to the end-user - you can't see it when you buy a blade. But it's the single most important factor in blade performance. A blade with poor sintering will fail fast, regardless of how good the diamonds or the core are.
