Why is wet polishing the mainstream in shops?
Open any decent stone fabrication shop's drawer – wet pads are the majority. The reason is simple – wet pads use water cooling. No burning, longer life, doubled pad life. Water removes three things at once: heat (prevents stone discoloration and resin melting), stone slurry (prevents pad clogging), and dust (keeps the shop clean).
Dry pads are convenient – no water needed. But they cost you in shorter life, burning risk, and dust. Wet pads need water hookup – more setup. But in a shop with water lines already in place, that's not a problem. The advantages come through loud and clear.
What makes Buff Pro different from regular wet pads?
Regular wet pads sell a "7‑piece set" – 50# to 3000#. Good enough. Golden rule: Don't skip grits. Jumping from 200# directly to 800# – the 800 pad can't efficiently remove 200 scratches. You'll spend three times longer on 800 and may never fully eliminate the haze. Honoring the progression actually makes you faster.
How long does a wet pad last? Why do wet pads last longer than dry pads?
Wet pads last significantly longer than dry pads. The reason is water cooling.
Dry pads dissipate heat through the pad itself – higher temperature, faster resin aging. Wet pads have continuous water cooling – lower temperature, slower resin aging.
Factors affecting life:
Stone hardness (granite wears faster than marble)
Grit (coarse grits wear faster than fine grits)
Water flow (too little water – insufficient cooling – pads burn)
Technique (excessive pressure or wrong speed burns pads)
Total cost = pad price ÷ pieces polished + change‑out labor + rework cost
Wet pads may cost slightly more than dry pads upfront. But longer life, no burning, no rework – total cost is actually lower.
